Luke 5:8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!" 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men." 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.
Peter had a choice. He left the world’s security, all he had ever known, behind him and chose to walk with Christ. Whenwe When we choose to follow Christ... it’s a walk of faith. He commands us to follow. Peter did. He left that boat and began a new fishing enterprise, fishing for people.
Just like Peter, God has called you to leave your nets and follow Him. Are you willing to establish God as you first and foremost for life. Is your personal walk of faith more important to you than a promotion at work? I found this story some years ago and it well demonstrates our challenge.
In 1904 William Borden, heir to the Borden dairy estate, graduated from a Chicago high school as a millionaire. His parents gave him a trip around the world. Traveling through Asia, the Middle East, and Europe gave Borden a burden for the world’s hurting people. Writing home, he said, "I’m going to give my life to prepare for the mission field."
When he made this decision, he wrote in the back of his Bible two words: "No Reserves." Turning down high-paying job offers after graduating from Yale University, he entered two more words in his Bible: "No Retreats."
Completing studies at Princeton Seminary, Borden sailed for China to work with Muslims, stopping first in Egypt for some preparation. While there, he was stricken with cerebral meningitis and died within a month. A waste, you say! Not in God’s plan. In his Bible underneath the word "No Reserves" and "No Retreats," he had written the words "No Regrets. (http://home.snu.edu/~hculbert/regret.htm)
William had heard the call, he made his choice and he never looked back. A life that responds to God in faith will end with no regrets. No matter what we think we are giving up in this world, we will find God's favor out-weighs any temporary reward.
I ask you today- have you began this walk of faith? You have been called to live in surrender and whatever He commands you must do.
Blessings,
Dennis Ward
