Since we are each interested in the future we often find ourselves anticipating what is in store. Some seek palm readers, psychics, and astrology for a look into the future.
Our text speaks of a person who is making yearly plans concerning business. This person, as we all, makes some serious miscalculations.
The planner is self-absorbed.
Verse 13: “Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit.”
The only problem with his plan is that he never mentions God. He’s not consulting with God. He’s not seeking the will of God. He’s like so many of us who have tried to segregate our lives into sacred and secular. The biggest fool is not the person who says there is no God; but the one who says there is a God and then lives as though there was not a God.
The planner is presumptuous.
14: “whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that. 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.”
We need to be careful of presumption which causes us to become frivolous with our use of time. We have no promise of days or continued health to carryout our plans. The only plans we can be absolutely certain of are God's plans for our lives.
The planner was negligent.
17: “ Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”
Apparently he knew what he ought to do, but he did not do it. He is aware that God has a plan, but he doesn’t want to do it.
Negligence is a deceptive sin. Other sins are obvious. Drunkenness, stealing, hate, violence, promiscuity and the like - are all obvious. Neglecting to do as God has instructed us may be concealed.
If you read John 3:18 you will see that it is negligence that leads to people dying in a lost condition; “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God…” It is not what they did, but what they didn't do.
The reason that homes break up is the sin of omission. The reason that churches fail is the sin of omission, it is because of people failing to do what they ought to do.
What is God’s plan for your life?
I can tell you this with a certainty: If you’re lost – His will is that you be born into His family. If you’re saved and out if His will, his plan is that you be restored through repentance of your sin. If you’re seeking direction, His plan is that you strengthen your relationship with Him and let Him guide you through the Holy Spirit.
